Picturesque New Bern was founded in 1710 and settled by Swiss and German colonists led by Baron Christopher de Graffenried. The area was named for Bern, Switzerland.

Historic downtown New Bern has an abundance of art galleries and specialty stores offering antiques, arts and crafts, clothing and jewelry, as well as elegant restaurants and cozy cafes.
Since 1997, legendary Hatteras Yachts has been headquartered on New Bern’s waterfront where it
manufactures yachts that have set the standard for ruggedness and high performance in all waters.
